With e-cigarettes becoming more commonplace worldwide, it was inevitable that users would start looking for new ways to enjoy the vaping experience—and they found it! A few resourceful vapers manipulated their e-cig’s power levels to create an entirely different way of vaping: Sub-Ohming. This new form of vaping became so popular that e-cig manufacturers even began releasing Sub-Ohm-capable devices.
While we’ll explain things a little more in-depth in a moment, in simplest terms, Sub-Ohming is the practice of vaping using a coil with a resistance level, known as an Ohm, below 1. It results in bigger clouds, more potent flavour, and warmer vapour.
When choosing a vape kit, it helps to understand what makes them tick. An Ohm (Ω) is a well-known unit that measures resistance. When you lower the resistance in a vape device, it produces higher charges. A higher charge means more power, which provides a more potent vaping experience. Mouth-to-lung (MTL) is the classic way to vape. In the early days, companies appealed to cigarette smokers by creating a similar experience. You draw the vapour in your mouth and inhale it into your lungs. Now, this is important: vape devices that recommend this method have coils with a 1Ω to 2.5Ω resistance level. Sub-Ohm vapes, on the other hand, typically have a lower resistance range (hence, the name) of 0.1 Ω to 0.99Ω. With lower resistance, you get additional vapour and a smoother hit. This form of vaping also uses a different e-liquid that gives off thicker clouds. To summarize, Sub-Ohming has:

Sub-Ohm devices use high wattage and low resistances to provide more vapour, but what’s the point of that extra hit if you don’t know how to take it optimally? The way you inhale with a Sub Vape is slightly different from your regular MTL vaping. The latter involves dragging vapour in your mouth before it goes down into your lungs. Sub-Ohm vaping uses a more streamlined process where the smoke goes directly into the lungs. That means that you have to inhale more intensely to get the product. We recommend that you try making fast and forceful draws: combined with better airflow, a Sub-Ohm compatible vape juice, and higher mod power, you can get better clouds. Bigger, faster draws also help keep your device’s coils cooler.
If you’re a beginner, we recommend using regulated box mods because they are some of the safest Sub-Ohm devices. Pick out a mod with a lower voltage level that uses fixed position contacts, a single-piece tube, and a magnetic switch for an optimal and safe Sub-Ohming experience. There are plenty of rebuildable, Sub-Ohm compatible mods that don’t require a lot of experience. These mods have tanks that often use a multiple mesh coil system that provides richer clouds and higher wattages. If you’re a cloud chaser, a high-wattage mod, dual-coil dripper, and rebuildable atomizer combo is a solid choice. Lastly, those who prefer a mech mod outfitted with a Sub-Ohm tank need to make sure that the vents are correctly working since they’re the only way heat can escape your mod. Never use mods that don’t have vents, and never combine hybrid mods with a non-hybrid compatible tank. Those two designs are a disaster waiting to happen.
The optimal wattage for Sub Vapes is at least 40 watts, but some can go as high as 200+ watts for more vaping power. Once upon a time, people resorted to manipulating their devices beyond the safe capacity to get their desired potency, but these days, there are plenty of high-wattage vapes available on the market. If you’re unsure what level of wattage you prefer, you can get regulated mods that let you change their settings. Regulated mods have optional temperature, voltage, and wattage control settings to provide more room for experimentation. Most mechanical mods, stick mods, and pod vapes don’t have this option, though. If you get a regulated mod, the best wattage depends on your vape juice, hardware, and personal preference. Don’t be afraid to try out different combinations and see what suits your taste.
Sub-Ohm vape liquids often use a higher percentage of PG (propylene glycol) and VG (vegetable glycerin). PG is used to convey nicotine and flavour while giving a stronger throat hit. VG, on the other hand, is viscous, which is excellent for making thicker clouds but with a milder throat hit. Generally, the optimal Sub-Ohming ratio has a higher VG component. You also need to consider the amount of nicotine you want. Sub-Ohming can increase your nicotine intake because of the additional vapour produced. That’s why Sub-Ohm vape liquids often have lower nicotine levels. With lower levels, you also get a more pronounced vape flavour and increased vapour production. Experiment with different PG/VG ratios and nicotine levels to get your desired cloud production, throat hit, and flavour intensity.
Most devices have a recommended battery, but hybrid lithium and IMR batteries are typically safe options. Most vapers use 18650 batteries, but you can find mods capable of using 20700 and 21700 variants. Always purchase your batteries from reputable brands and never use ones with visible surface damage. Batteries with higher amp limits are great for Sub-Ohm vaping. Never go above your battery’s amp limit. You can also check for your battery’s resistance level with an Ohms reader to ensure its compatibility with your device.
When the method first hit the scene, Sub-Ohm vapers had limited options. Those who used RDA systems had to drip their e-juice manually, which can be inconvenient. RTA users, though, had an easier time, which is why they remain relatively popular. However, the increasing popularity of Sub-Ohming brought forth specialized tanks that are better performing and user-friendly. Unlike RTAs, Sub-Ohm tanks use disposable coils that are more convenient. You’ll have no trouble finding these tanks since they’re usually offered as an optional upgrade for compatible mods.
